From Mr. Go-To Guy to Mr. President of FICOBank

Atty. Hubert E. Molina joined FICOBank in 2002. It was barely two months after he tied the knot with his lovely and wonderful wife.

Sometime in 2001, he encountered a difficult crossroad in his life, the crucial decision of which will define his future. He was confronted with the issues of whether to continue his lucrative and challenging legal practice, or to settle his family in Manila where he lived almost half of his life or relocate in his native land of Isabela. At that time, he was a Senior Associate Lawyer of JGLaw, then Bengzon Law Firm, a Makati-based law firm. His practice was concentrated on corporate-tax matters with well-known celebrities, respected personalities, domestic and multinational companies, as among the clients he handled. He was also then in the academe as a part-time lecturer in Manuel L. Quezon University (College of Law), Centro Escolar University and St. Scholasticas’ College. As if he never sleeps, he was also a Consultant of the Department of Agrarian Reform. Some would say he was an indefatigable workhorse.

When he was interviewed by Mr. Herminio G. Ocampo, the late President of FICOBank, the latter confided to him that they are looking for someone who can help the “team” give some direction, as the Bank is in its upward trend. As a Certified Public Accountant and a Lawyer, he is no stranger to the venture and financial intricacies of the banking industry and, in fact, he realized that he is receptive and energized by the idea. They instantly hit it off and he knew that he is already on board. As he revealed, “It seemed that a sign from the stars above has fallen and I was mesmerized by the new challenges of the prospect.” After that interview, everything fell into place and the rest is history.

As a new FICOBanker back in 2002, he was initially designated as the Executive Assistant to the President, a position which he held for 13 years. The very first action that he did was the formulation and establishment of the Bank’s retirement plan. At first, some were apprehensive about the plan, but, eventually, many were delighted. He was later privileged to head, in a concurrent capacity, the Asset Management Department, now Asset Management and Legal Department (AMLD), a baby project of the Board of Directors, but which was then operating passively. With a mandate to resolve the rising non-performing assets, as well as the perennial documentation problems of the Bank, he meticulously and cautiously scrutinized, devised and executed various strategies and action plans. With his relentless efforts and bold and fearless decisions, immediate positive results were felt by the Bank. Over a period of time, the non-performing assets of the Bank were considerably reduced to a single-digit rate. With that accomplishment, the role of the AMLD was highlighted as one of the main pillars and embodiment of success of FICOBank, which other banks are envious about and would like to duplicate. Some are saying that it is not the department that matters, but the person who runs it; to which, he humbly disagreed and pointed to the bankwide team effort, as the single element for the success. With his intrinsic leadership and outstanding performance, he was designated as the Vice President for Administration & Support Services and the Senior Vice President of the Treasury & Corporate Services afterward. He ably leads and guides all the support departments/offices in performing their respective mandates, and in accomplishing their respective plans and programs. He also sees to it that, as much as possible, all the support requirements of the Operation and Banking Services Group (OBSG) are well-attended to.

In more than a decade that he is with FICOBank, he has earned the reputation of being a relentless, energetic, dynamic and effervescent worker. His insights and decisions are highly respected and recognized not only by his peers and staff, but most especially by the management. At some point, he was likewise appointed as the Corporate Secretary, Legal Counsel, Head of the Human Resource and Administration Department, and member of various Board-level committees. His appointments to various positions in the Bank, which were oftentimes in a concurrent capacity, did not elicit any complaint from him and, in fact, welcomed them gleefully.

With his multifaceted skills and traits, it’s no wonder why, from being the Mr. Go-To Guy of the Bank, the Board of Directors has bestowed upon him the power, authority and responsibility of the Bank’s President & Chief Executive Officer, effective February 3, 2016.

As a person, his most marked trait is his sense of humor. He is quick-witted and funny, a charming conversationalist and always ready for a good time. But believe it or not, he is the silent type, a very private and God-fearing person. Coming from a family of professionals (his mother is a lawyer, his late father was a physician, and his three brothers are an engineer, a physician and a CPA), he remains humble.

For this untiring person, he draws his strength and inspiration from his lovely wife, the former Ms. Zeenat (“Snooky”) Nitura, and three wonderful children—Jan Raphael, Ray Adelbert and Zophia Ruth.

When asked by his friends in Manila, as to what really is he doing here in the far-flung province of Isabela, he just simply, but proudly, said, “I am now a banker, not an ordinary banker, but a FICOBanker.”
